Teachers work in schools and can teach different age ranges of children and adolescents (elementary, middle school, high school). Although they follow a laid-out curriculum, they are responsible for creating their own lesson plans. If you are a teacher, you will have some clearly defined and repetitive tasks (e.g., grading tests, teaching a certain subject).


This job requires the minimum of a bachelor’s degree. Some states may require further education (e.g., a master’s degree). Most states require public school teachers to be licensed. Their specialization in their college degree will help route them to the subjects that they may teach in school. 

Previous Experience

Previous experience working as a teacher or in a school-setting is preferred. Although many employers prefer that you have previous experience in the same or similar area of employment setting, it is strongly encouraged that you apply anyways.

Job Duties

  • Prepare materials, activities, and lesson plans based on a pre-determined curriculum.
  • Facilitate student learning by instructing the prepared lesson plans.
  • Read to students and engage students in school-related activities.
  • Assign homework and readings to students.
  • Evaluate each student’s progress via tests, quizzes, and assignments given.
  • Grade/mark student tests, quizzes, and assignments.
  • Establish rules for conduct and ensure that students are adhering to proper behavioral conduct.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to develop lesson plans, measurable objectives, and data collection systems.
  • Regularly communicate with parents/guardians of students.

What’s Your Scene?

This job requires that you are able to work “In the Scene’. If you are working as a teacher, you will be working with students on a regular basis.  You will be speaking with and interacting with students daily and must have relatively strong social skills.  You will also need to interact with co-workers (e.g. other teachers, supervisors) and parents regularly.

Skills / Abilities

Specialized Knowledge - Possess specialized knowledge and use appropriate instructional strategies for the curriculum areas and grade levels being taught. Typically this training and knowledge comes from a college degree.

Reading Comprehension - Demonstrated ability to read, and follow written instructions and ideas.

Oral Comprehension - Demonstrated ability to understand and follow verbal instructions and ideas.

Written Expression - You will be required to write and spell correctly.

Oral Expression - You will be required to speak clearly and effectively.

Organization and Prioritization - This job requires the ability to clearly organize and categorize work priorities to complete your work.

Environmental Demands

Location – Schools are located indoors in a climate-controlled setting. However, if you are monitoring students during recess, you will be required to go outside.

Noise Level - The noise level will usually be moderate to loud. During busy times, you will need to be okay with the sounds of ‘hustling and bustling’ in a school (e.g., students chatting, bells going off).

Lighting Level - Schools typically use florescent lighting.

Work Hours- This job will be full-time (8am - 4pm).

Amount of Movement - This job typically requires that you stand and sit. You will need to be able to sit, stand, walk, reach, push, and carry items for this job.

Cleanliness and Odors - This job setting is generally clean. Part of your job will most likely include helping students keep their work areas clean and picking up after students.

Work Attire - Work attire will typically be business casual clothing.

Structure and Predictability - This job will typically have a lower degree of predictability and structure.  This means that while you might do the same tasks each day, these tasks might be completed in a different order each day (e.g., teaching different students during different class periods).  You might not always know ahead of time how long each task will take to complete.  You might not work in the same areas or location each day (e.g., different class rooms), however, you will interact with the same people (e.g., students and teachers) almost every day. 

What's the Pace?

    • Steady:  In most cases, the work pace will be steady, which means that you will always have some work to do.  When the work pace is steady, you are working at a level “5” on a scale of “1” (nothing to do) to “10” (extremely busy, rushed pace).
