Will, age 10

strategies

  • Speak clearly in short sentences and using simple vocabulary.

  • Provide prompts, verbal or visual, to serve as reminders and help avoid nagging. For children with organizational or reading difficulties, the use of pictures and schedules can be helpful.

  • Practice gross motor skills with team sports, such as basketball, soccer or softball.

  • Enhance self-esteem by providing time to participate in activities that the child can be successful at.

  • Teach social skills and provide opportunities for practice and generalization.

  • Break up tasks into small segments; give directions for each segment separately.

  • Allow for modifications in length of assignments and methods of assessments.

  • Please check our list of all resources at Site Map to see if there are other items that can help your child.
